Málokdo ví, že kdysi tak skandální román D. H. Lawrence Milenec lady Chatterleyové měl dvě mladší literární verze. Režisérka si pro svůj film vybrala tu druhou, vydanou ve Francii pod názvem Lady Chatterley et l´homme des bois. Na rozdíl od adaptací britských, francouzských, amerických i od české televizní adaptace z roku 1998 (se Zdenou Studenkovou, Borisem Rösnerem a Markem Vašutem), jež vycházely z oné nejslavnější třetí verze, tato neakcentuje tolik sociální, společenské ani vypjatě erotické motivy, ale klade důraz na příběh vášně, z níž se zrodí osudová láska dvou osamělých lidí. Třiadvacetiletá Constance se provdala za důstojníka a majitele dolů Clifforda Chatterleye. Píše se však rok 1917 a novomanžel se vrací z války jako mrzák. Mladý pár se uchýlí na venkovské sídlo Wragby, vzdálené veškerému společenskému dění. A tam se osamělá, nešťastná lady setkává s hajným Olivierem Parkinem a vzplane mezi nimi vášnivý hluboký cit.
